DAKAR FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION
In April 2000 more than 1,100 people from 164 countries gathered in Dakar, Senegal,
for the World Education Forum. From teachers to prime ministers (and a whole bunch of other people!),
they agreed that education was important, in a document called the
Dakar Framework for Action, Education for All.
The Dakar Framework says that the governments should work together (and some should give aid to education) so that all children can have quality basic education by 2015, including girls and children with difficult lives.
The Dakar goals are to:
- Expanding early childhood care – like kindergarten and pre-school.
- Make sure that all children, (including girls), go to school by 2015, especially children with difficult lives or children from ethnic minorities.
- Make sure that EVERYONE (children & adults) have equal access to some education, like life-skills education.
- Lots of adults in the world can’t read, especially women. So we want to make sure that half of all the people who can’t read, learn to read by 2015. (This is called Adult literacy).
- Make sure that boys and girls receive the same education by 2015. (Right now in many places, boys get more education. In some places, girls get more education.)
- Help schools and teachers become better – improve the quality of education – so that children have better education – especially knowing how to read, do math, and know important things in life.
