Instructions for writing to your MP
- If students do not already know who their local Member of Parliament is, look for this information together. MPs can be found on http://www.parl.gc.ca using the school's postal code. Take a few minutes to talk about what is the role and responsibility of their local MP and why it is important for the MP to hear from them and how that would make a difference.
- Brainstorm with students about what they would tell their MP about the state of schooling for children in many parts of the world based on all the previous activities. Then ask them what they would tell the MP about Canada's role in helping developing countries improve their basic education system. Elicit suggestions on what they think Canada can and should do. You can you use the "What is Canada's Role?" fact sheets (Gr. 3/4, Gr. 5/6). as a basis for this discussion.
- Tell them they are going to write to their local MP with their suggestions. You can follow the template letter included in our curriculum materials or allow the children to freely express themselves.
- Copies of the letter may also be sent to the Prime Minister and the Minister for International Cooperation.
Please register online, to get your class/group involved in the global movement. If you are a grade 3-6 classroom, by registering, you can recieve a free hard-copy including all the activities!
